High sulfur bituminous coal has long been used for steam generation in electric power

plants and industrial boiler plants. With increasing environmental regulation, new ways

must be found to use this energy resource. It has been proposed that the coal be gasified,

with the exit gas mixture cleaned by absorption towers, to yield a reactant mixture

containing primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen. This gas can be reacted to yield high

quality synthetic natural gas, which can be used to generate electricity. The synthesis of

natural gas follows the gas phase heterogeneous catalytic reaction:
