Study Andrew Carnegie, “The Gospel of Wealth” 1889 and Henry Demarest Lloyd, “Critique of Wealth” 1894 in your text book, Exploring American Histories.
Take notice of their different points-of-view regarding the potential of concentrated wealth and power in a democracy.
Imagine yourself at the hair salon and seated to your right is Andrew Carnegie and to your left is Henry Demarest Lloyd. They are arguing back and forth over the issue of great wealth and power. The three hair care professionals feign indifference, but you can sense their discomfort. The person working on your hair bends over and whispers in your ear, “Which side are you on?”
Take a position and, using details from both documents, explain why to the person working on your hair.
