Question IV Consulting Job: Analytical Techniques (25 pts) You have been called in as a consultant to help the Northern Coastal Light University (NoCLU). There was a fire in the university’s famous Katt’s Museum of Eclectic Objects and Wonders (MEOW) and, although no sample in the museum was damaged, all sample labels were destroyed by water when the fire was put out. In addition samples were moved and the NoCLU faculty is totally confused about which samples are which. Their labs are extremely well equipped with chemical instrumentation. In addition to optical microscopy and sample preparation labs, you can choose to use x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray fluorescence (XRF), inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) (flame and furnace), electron microprobe analysis with wavelength-dispersive x-ray spectrometry (WDS-EMPA), thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS), instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with EDS and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and a thermal techniques lab (including differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dilatometer). NoCLU is paying you a fixed amount of money for each determination but you have to cover analytical expenses yourself and you are staying at an expensive hotel so you need to use the quickest technique (although you can leave for a while and come back at essentially no cost). For each set of samples taken from the wreck of the Katt’s MEOW, what technique would you use to distinguish between the samples? (You should give a single answer for each set of samples. Do not give a list.) You want to save time and money but you must use a technique that gives a definitive re-sult. Explain your reasoning for each set of samples.
